Eric Charles Talaska "Eco Eric" (born March, 1969 in Findlay, Ohio) is an environmentalist innovator, an inventor, and an entrepreneur with a diverse background and a variety of talents. Eric founded EcoWhale.com which launches eco-friendly programs. He also does website design.
Early Life
In 1977 at age 8, Eric moved to Texarkana, Texas. He was a Cub Scout at age 9, played baseball and played the baritone at age 12. In his teens, He liked hiking and motorcycles. He was able to disassemble and successfully reassemble motorcycles completely on his own by age 14. In 1984, Eric first learned about personal computers. He was made fun of for suggesting the power button be placed on the front of the computer, not back. He spent a lot of time collecting stamps, but later stopped collecting. He graduated high school in 1987.4
Eric joined the U.S. Army immediately after high school. His "ASVAB" score of 109 was considered high which was unexpected as he performed poor in high school. He worked as a Radioteletype Operator. He had added duties of cryptography in a Military Intelligence unit. He achieved a Top Secret, Special Background Investigation security clearance5 with access to "sensitive compartmented information".6 Eric's national security and other responsibilities were remarkable for only being 19 years old. Eric credits the Army for encouraging him to go to college of which he did in addition to his full time duties. He received an Honorable Discharge by choice and effort to leave. He remained in the Individual Ready Reserve for six more years.7 Later in college, Eric was able to transfer his Army experience and training into one year of Reserve Officer Training.
In 1989, Eric moved back to Texarkana and did tire factory work. He considered it mentally and physically "superhuman" work. He worked the night shift and took college classes at Texarkana College during the day to top it off. He was a TC News Reporter.8 In 1992 Eric read Stephen Covey's book and became inspired to quit the factory job and attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Arkansas full time. He was an officer of the Arkansas Committee and campaigned against the reelection of George H.W. Bush.9 He interned at KFSM-TV and worked with the University's media services. In May, 1995 Eric wrote his final college research paper "The Future of Internet-Facilitated Communication". He graduated in 1995 with a B.A. in Communication and is the only of his generation to obtain a college degree. His name is engraved in the University's famed Senior Walk. Upon graduating, he moved around and held several jobs in search of gratification and to gain diversified experiences.
In 1995, Eric invented an inline skate brake while skating the Pinellas Trail in Dunedin, Florida. He then lived near Washington D.C. to explore the area attractions and to do patent research. He built a working prototype of his brake invention. He wrote and successfully prosecuted pro se his own patent10 with a method claim, a difficult combination to achieve. Eric's invention, the "Hand Activated Brake and Method" solved speed control and braking which is the leading problem with inline skates.11 Eric was awarded U.S. Patent #5,860,492 in 1999. He invested in building brakes that he marketed particularly on the Internet. Eric claims he has the creative talent to invent many other useful products, but he says he has been discouraged due to the extreme time, money and failure rate of the patent process and marketing.12 In 1996 Eric worked as one of the relatively first Internet webmasters and soon became an Internet domain name broker, with emphasis on Internet start-up companies.13
In 1998, Eric achieved a Paralegal Certificate and worked for a law firm in Daingerfield, Texas as an asbestos litigation paralegal and bonded Notary Public. In 2001, Eric began to apply for law school to be an environmental lawyer. He had strong credentials and recommendations, but decided not to attend. Rather, in 2004 he purchased his first building in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, moved there and spent the first few years remodeling it and opened eBalcony.com, his own home based computer store where he built and serviced computers and did website design. He adopted a dog, Tippy II, who greeted his customers. Eric's grandfather Rudolf Erler from Schmolln, Germnay had his own home-based business too, but disappeared in the Western Front (World War II), so Eric dedicated his business to Rudolf.14
In 2006, Eric read books on natural health and how to detox and made significant diet changes towards vegetarianism and made attempts to educate and help others regarding the subject. In 2007, Eric adapted "The Law of Attraction" & "We are All One" works, a great detachment from his parent's Catholic religion and lifestyle. Eric sold his building in late 2008, took a vacation to Florida to swim with manatees, dolphins, etc.. He also continued to help his mother as he had been doing for eight years with her illnesses until she passed in 2009. Eric spent countless hours assembling a family website and photo albums. He took another very large vacation and did environmental research all around the southwestern states.
